FREE SERIOUS FEEDBACK

Hi everyone. OuO

This thread is all about recieving serious FEEDBACK on drawings and art in general.
I love art. And it'd be cool to see everyone improve on this site and save you some of that precious thing also known as TIME.

How it works:

1) Post a link to your drawing (Could be on rmd, deviant, other internet sources are allowed too)
2) Give a small discription of what it is you're trying to communicate.
3) You'll recieve serious and honest personal feedback on your art and some positive energy to hopefully motivate you to improve on your next artistic endeavour.

This can be in the form of constructive criticism in text or a "paintover", where i literally paint over your drawing to point out what could be improved. Hopefully this adds some value to rmd as a collective.

Thanks for your time.

This one, if it's alright with you. ^^;

I wanted it to look like a realistic portrait. But it clearly has a touch of manga in it. I'm not sure if it's the proportions, or the coloring. Or both..

There you go, Cam. Could've gone more in depth, the proportions are working imho. And what you're communicating is quite clear. Art can be more enjoyable when we actually stop and think about what it is we're trying to communicate.

Thanks cool

When it comes to drawing fur or even long hair directional guides are used quite often. You could create a simple layer and call it something like "hair guide", on this layer you draw arrows showing the direction of the hair/fur.

With this in place, choose a flat color and start blocking, don't go crazy, just the basic shapes.

Consider the light source, you could add another layer for this if you wanna.
Now start drawing in the values, shadows, midtones, highlights. Tip: The areas in shadow are generally the most saturated. Zoom out and look at the picture from a distance, is it working? If it's working as a thumbnail it usualy does when blown up. The opacity of the brush should be lower when working on fur/hair details, since it gradually fades away.

Here's some reference that might be of use, it's pretty hi-res so you can see all the details:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/c … skin_2.jpg

With that said, the background seems rushed, you could've used CanvasDraw. No ink limit.
Hopefully you'll get something out of this. Thanks for your entry.

To be quite honest, when I was drawing this I was so focused. In the end I wanted the cat to look focused as well. I used a reference, but I lost it OTL I wanted to make the fur look textured, but I wasn't quite positive how to do this with these RMD tools u_u One eye is more dilated because that's how it was shown in the reference. I feel like I could have put more effort into the ear, but I was so tired ~ ♥ Thanks in advanced ^^

Something that i've noticed right away are the poses and the manner in wich you shade your characters.
The shadows could be a tad darker to emphasize the 3 dimensionality of the characters. You're not shading using 2 simple tones.

As mentioned previously, the poses could be stronger and the lines could be more consistent, the character in the middle has thicker lines compared to the others. You might've done this to emphasize that particular character or personality and bring it to the foreground, but there are plenty of other ways to do so without sacrificing consistency.

Also, don't be afraid to break up the silhouette of the characters. You could've introduced some more interesting folds and wrinkles in the clothing, for example. The same goes for the main character, try breaking up the silhouette's symmetry and play with the basic shapes.

A quick note on the anatomy, the character holding the swords could've been more top heavy when compared to the legs and head. The ribcage, deltoids, trapizius and latissimus dorsi muscles could all be beefed up a bit.
Good job on the color pallette, you've chosen some nice complimentary colors wich work well when combined.

Here's some examples of the Japanese mecha anime television series animated by Gainax and co-produced by Aniplex and Konami, Gurren Lagann.

These are what i consider reasonable group shots, the silhouettes are interesting, the complimentary color pallette is there, strong poses and all that jazz. Woohoo!

Also, Studio Ghibli's Hayao Miyazaki just called, something about stealing your skills. D: >
All in all, nice drawing bro. Keep it up!

Hi there. OuO That's a great title and the drawing communicates that to a certain extent. The original you did looked a bit different in my humble opinion. What happened to the reflection in the water? That's a nice touch of "emotion" right there. The redrawn version seems to be lacking this.

In contrast the new drawing looks better in terms of composition and values, the tones you've chosen for the grass, water and rose are definitely better. What strikes me however is how 2 dimensional the overall drawing is. Was this done intentionally? If not, try searching some simple reference of a rose and go from there. This way you'll get to introduce some more intricate details like rose petals, water drops, textures, wich in turn could add to that "reflection" you missed during your 2nd attempt.

The basic shapes of the rose could be worked out some more too, check out the added reference below. Big shapes first, small shapes last.

The background could use some work, perhaps a light source shining throw the blades of grass creating an sss effect. The term sss stands for subsurface scattering, this basically is the effect we see when we hold our hand against the sun or intense light source. The tips of the fingers become highly saturated and have an almost ghostly feel to them, the same effect can be simulated with a candle.

Here's some reference that might help make this more interesting:

Hai. <3 Great drawing, infinie. Just hunted down the original reference for you.

http://widescreen.qkype.com/wallpapers/ … _67849.jpg
http://i45.tinypic.com/2n9x30p.jpg

All the basic shapes are there, the overall silhouette, the values, the highlights, it all seems to be working. The lighting conditions are a bit exaggerated in places, but it's ok to add a bit of your own touch as seen in your painterly brush strokes.

The whiskers could've been thicker too. Also, the area around the whiskers, the ears and neck seem to be off, wich would be where started getting tired and losing focus.

This is a good time to save your drawing and come back to it, as opposed to finishing it in a sloppy manner. It can't be said often enough. Save and save often! xD Try to save at least every 10 to 15 minutes or so, overwrite the original or simply delete all the unwanted files afterwards.

Other than that there's not much to add to this, you did a great job and should be more confident when using the tools. You could play around and create your own custom brush. There are no magical tools that will get the job done, it's mainly focus and hard work.

Thanks for your entry!

If it isn't the one and only nirvana. xD Two entries at a time? That's bold, dude. Let's see what we can do.

First off, i've noticed certain tools and colors being used in almost every new drawing you do. Suggestion: Try not to.

As we both know, abstract is quite open to interpretation. The one entitled "Prayers being answered", could be anything, for example. The only indications that might reasonate with that seem to be a person in a kneeling position with hands together and the wavy thing in the background, imho.  Both don't seem to be very defined. Same goes for the other drawing.

There's this concept in art referred to as "vocal point". There could've been more emphasization on the vocal points in your drawings.

Widely used religious symbolism such as the sunrays behind a god or the cross, moon, wings, zodiac and so forth could've added something to the drawing as a whole.

The color pallette is another thing that could've been much more interesting, don't be afraid to play with the entire universe of color. Same goes for style, try to surprise yourself by doing things you've never done before.

Long before you and me were born, even during ancient times where people drew in caves there was creativity, nirvana. Vocail points everywhere. Thanks for your entries. OuO

Hi Crimson. Thanks for posting. Here's my 2 cents:

The proportions look off, especially on the limbs and head. The pose could be more interesting and the hair is off, wich is something i've noticed on all your other deviant drawings.
The basic shapes are lacking and are mostly 2 dimensional, it's good practice to look through your drawing as though it was composed of 3d objects.
The waist is too thin, wich i believe was previously mentioned and you could've introduced some more folds and wrinkles. Good job on the tattoo.

As for shading, don't be afraid to use darker tones to bring out the volume of the shapes i mentioned. And maybe a more saturated pallette would make it pop even better. Otherwise, nice drawing. Thanks for your entry and keep drawing. <3
