If you are experiencing memory issues with the Java drawing tool, you can assign more memory to Java so it can handle more detail in your drawings and more layers, etc.
I would recommend the following settings depending on how much memory your computer has:
- Computers with 1GB memory or less - 64MB (this is usually the default setting for Java so you need do nothing)
- Computers with 2GB memory - 128MB (view the video below and type in -Xmx128m)
- Computers with 4GB memory - 256MB (view the video below and type in -Xmx256m)
You should not need to assign more than 256MB, but you can if you are confident in assigning more dedicated RAM to Java.
Here is a demo of how to change your Java memory settings in Windows...
Please refer to the guide above for how much memory to assign and what to type.

IMPORTANT: You may need to restart your computer for changes to take effect

Just to clarify - it does not matter how much memory you have (even if you have 4 or 8GB RAM) - Java by default when installed only assigns itself a very small amount of memory. If when you draw, you never get into the issue of not being able to create more layers then you are probably fine - but if you do hit this limitation then I recommend you assign more memory to Java.
As we introduce larger canvases, it will be more common that people may need to assign more than the default amount of memory.

Mick, I don't know if this had anything to do with this (I think it does, maybe...), but every time I try to load my drawing (.chi file) it just says "IO error with [name of file]." I was wondering if you could help me out...
