Hi. I noticed that lots of drawings on RMD which use references are sometimes getting four stars out of five. Does this have to do with users using the refs?! Do people rate drawings lower when refs are used? Do you believe me, or do you think it's only the quality of the drawing that matters? It's up to you. Post your opinion(s) below! ▼▼
I will be answering any questions as soon as I can!
NOTE: I've noticed that some people have been saying that four out of five hearts is NOT low, and I Completely agree, but the soul purpose of this post is to hear opinions from people. I just want to know if you believe that drawings get rates lower than five hearts when references are used. Thanks!

I only rate 5/5
But I respect original artists who can create their own work many times more than those who find it necessary to use refs on everything.....
I find myself rating more original drawings.... but I don't rate fanart lower, just because it's fanart. I don't see how people are proud of themselves for directly copying a reference and then calling it their own, though.

I don't like referenced drawings.
I practiced my drawings the hard way. No references.
I don't understand why people need it, but heck. I tolerate it.
Refs get honest ratings of me.
But... I don't even bother rating 99% of the refs.
You can't comment:
"I love the design. The colour combination is wonderfully made up and that
hair style was a really awesome idea.".
Because they didn't make the drawing up. Someone else did. And I'd rather praise that person!
It's often that I don't notice if a ref has been used.
Artist often don't say it.
GIVE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE.
I want to see the artist in the drawing. It doesn't feel original if I can't see the artist. Artists have their own unique style as their trademark and that's what I adore about the artists here. I can often recognize drawings and say which artist it belongs to.
personally, I don't want see any reffed drawings at all.
Use your imagination.
I think hard to make an unique drawing.
And if there's a referenced drawing between the top drawings on the homepage, I just... ... ... ...
I'd feel underrated.
p.s.
the church bells are ringing. The sound scares the **** out of me T_T

Yeah ... Going off what red said...
How would you feel if someone started directly copying YOUR drawings and posting them as their own?
Dunno about you but I'd be kinda pis sed.... Not at all flattered.

Two different things are taken into account per drawing type.
The original submission:
You will see the amazing details some artists can come up with based on their own style. And you will feel the need to comment on how impressed you are by it.
The referenced/copied submission:
People need to criticize an artist's ability to keep the entire drawing as close to the original as possible. If the only way you can criticize is based on originality, then yeah. You won't like fanart, or referenced submissions very much. But then... Just leave them alone?
P.S.
What does stealing have to do with making fanart or copying certain aspects of someone elses drawing?

Like, for realism or manga? I need refs for human/realistic things, but for manga(rarely drawn by me) I sometimes use a ref for anatomy.

References are great for anatomy practice, IF you draw guides with them, not copying them directly.
If you're going to copy it without using guide you're not an artist you're just a copy machine. :-)
I agree :3 i don't like it when drawings are flat out copied, but every once in awhile i'll look at a reference to see how to draw something hard, like a hand. (they're hard for me, at least XD)

Yeah, 4 hearts is not a low rate.. 4 hearts is a "very good drawing" which isn't bad at all.

If I go and draw a screenshot from Death Note because I really like the screenshot, does that make me an art thief? Even though everyone knows that it's simple fanart?
Um, I don't think sooo... Uh, sorry, I really don't know. ..Yes? um... I need help D:

Rating 5 all the time is a ridiculous habit anyway. Nothing wrong with 4 hearts...
I'm not saying there's anything wrong with four hearts --it's still good-- I just want to know if people believe that users that use references for their drawings get lower rates.

I believe rating is mostly popularity based. But I do agree that a dark cloud (that seems to be growing), has been cast over artists that use a reference. And it is getting more difficult to understand the logic of what reference haters class as acceptable and what they class as unacceptable. Especially when you look at their own artwork. I've come to the conclusion that reference hating was an idea that an abstract artist (that wanted his paintings of blobs to be more popular) blurted, and now that idea has gone viral, and picked up many followers that don't really stop and think about what they are condemning.

I kinda want RMD users to go to any other site where submissions are rated on a fixed scale, and see how things go. On another site I visit, even the most popular and highest rated works are like 3.8 out of 5. The youngn's need to learn some humility, methinks.
Reference, copied, or original, if a drawing isn't any good, it isn't any good. Just because I look at a picture of a Mustang convertible and try to copy it exactly, doesn't mean I can. If someone is good at technical work and can recreate well, more power to them.
