Step 1

Right, the point is to make your fan art look as much as the character as possible, so you'll need a image to copy of. This is the one I used.

Step 2

next you need to arrange it so you can see both the image and the drawing tool. This is usually easier in floating mode.

<-- this is how i did it.

Step 3

call the first layer background, then create another layer
Start with a rough sketch, then put the opacity to about 50. Add another layer and do another sketch over the top of the previous, adding more detail.

Step 4

this was my finished detailed sketch. Yes, I did a lot of selecting and moving on the face. I had a lot of trouble with her head all the way through...

Step 5

add another layer and do a clean sketch. It doesn't have to be perfact, it's not going to be the final version. I think the most important tool for doing outlines is the smoothing bar. I do most of my lines with the smoothing between 80 and 95.

Step 6

now for colour! I'll go into detail about how I did the clothes. create a new layer below the lines and start adding the base colur.

Step 7

now, on the same layer, add the next colour (if there is one).

Step 8

still on the same layer, start adding the shading from the first colour...

Step 9

...and then the final bit of shading.

Step 10

then I did the same with the skin.

Step 11

this is when I did the background, by using the pen tool to do three shades of blue and then the smudge and blend tools to make it smooth.

Step 12

i finished colour and started on the final line art.

Step 13

finished line art. (smoothing bar. about 93.)

Step 14

final step. :) I used the pen tool for the stars. For the trees, i started with the watercolour brush to build up the basic tones, then added details with the pen tool.
Finally a frame, and your signature!
