In this tutorial I will show you how to draw any Anime-Manga style character using a Reference Image. Enjoy!
Step 1First, we need our reference image. This is the picture of the character that you want to draw. It can be a wallpaper or a screenshot or something like that! :3
We will start with an easy one!
Step 2Second, we are going to "extract" the character's pose structure. This process can be done mentally when you get used to it! ;3
I'll represent it using red lines.
As you can see, this is very simple, but is the most important step if you want your drawing to be as similar as possible as the original!
Step 3The third step consists in tracing something like subdivisions on the picture. You can subdivide it as many times as you like but there is no need for more than a vertical and an horizontal line at the center. This helps to get a closer proportion! :D
We end getting 4 rectangles. With this you can scale the original picture to the size of your workspace. :)
Step 4Ok, now we will prepare the workspace! We just need to draw the same divisions that we drew on the original picture. But how does it work? Well, its like when you have a big cake. If you try to eat it without splitting it you'll end up... well... dirty. But if you cut it in portions, you can eat it easier! xD
Oh yeah, this are basics at drawing using reference pictures!
Step 5Now... as you can see in the image on the left, using the "Guide lines" that we drew, we can figure out easier where it goes each part of the cute Taneshima-san! :D
If you examine the reference picture slowly, you will notice that the hips are close to the center, and that the right hand goes near there too. Same with the head and the feet.
And this is how it works!
Step 6Next, we are going to identify the bigger figures and its base shape and draw them. I mean, like the hair, or the big tray, plate, server of whatever that she's holding! xD
Step 7If you continue adding details, you'll get something like this. The trick is to pick reference spots and compare each other with the whole drawing and the original picture. This way, you'll be able to get a more satisfying result! xD
Step 8And here is another fast example!
Step 9After processing the image (I mean doing the past steps xD)...
Step 10And after smoothing the edges... we got this! xD
Ok this is the end of this tutorial, I'll make some other later :3
Hope you like it and find it useful!
