portrait Drawing Tutorial

 

Step 1

Start of by picking a reference pic. You can do it from your imagination to, but i find having a ref pic makes it much easier and more realistic.
The grid pattern tool in java is really helpful in proportioning. So i start off by doing a line sketch with the grid on!

 

Step 2

The black parts of the picture are really important so i fill those in second. when doing a portrait when you make the color lighter it tends to look not as realistic.

 

 

Step 3

This might have been easier to start off with a background color being skin tone. I was gunna color one layer and move it behind but because i started the drawing on the background layer the white was not opaque. so i colored in the skin instead. either way.. make it skin

 

Step 4

So in most drawings you would start with the shadows and then add in the light.. but my ref pic is really white in most places so i decided to put some of it in to start!

 

Step 5

so after i added in some lighting i started shading. its best to follow your ref pic as close as possible.. i use the scribble tool and make the colors opaque and then layer the lines.

 

 

Step 6

so i usually take a break from shading and lighting before im complete. so i can work on the other facail features such as the eyes. This way if something changes with the porportion you dont have to go over all your work.
for the eyes i start with a base color for the cornea and then just add in dark and light shades by looking at the ref pic

 

Step 7

next i shade above and below the eye.. and of course in the eye as well!

 

Step 8

i do the same for the other eye as well. the very last thing i do is add the lashes. I start of drawing the really light and then make it darker near the bottom. this way you can make placement of the lashes and if you mess up its easier to erase.

 

Step 9

from there i just pic corners as to where i wanna add in detail. added shading and lighting.
