Shiny hair! :D by Sakura8246

Step 1

First set your layers

I advise you to make the person first so you know what your drawing on.
For this tutorial I made the hair first, but usually I would start with the head.

PURPLE: Smoothing should be around 40-50% or higher so its easy to control the lines and will leave the lines smooth.

Step 2

Using one color, draw a sketch of what your hair will look like.
YELLOW: This will be on the layer "Hair"
RED: Brush you use, and brush size.

Step 3

PINK: Choose the eraser tool
YELLOW: Change it to "Round Hard Edge"
RED: Change the smoothing to a number higher than 50, so you can erase it smoothly, and leave it looking clean.
The "not smooth" was used will low smoothing. The "smooth was used with high smoothing.

Step 4

Clean up!
This is still on the "Hair" layer.

Step 5

YELLOW: Now on the the Pen tool, NOT PENCIL, choose a lighter color than the base color, but dont make it too light.

BLUE: Make your brush size smaller, but not too small.

RED:Still on the "Hair" Layer, choose "Lock Alpha", this will let you color on the already colored parts of the layer without going over. As you can see on the red arrows.

Step 6

Now choosing the "Blend" Tool, Im sorry, I forgot to highlight this. It is on the second row, down 5, right under the eraser tool, and above the "100% Zoom" tool.

YELLOW: Change the smoothing to a higher percentage, above 50%.

RED: All of the things in the "red" Area will stay the same, only the "yellow" are changed. The brush size is not changed ether.

PINK: Now pulling down, at where the line ends blend the line. DO NOT GO UP AND DOWN, only go up, or down, not back and forth. Do these at the ends of the highlights, and anywhere else you feel necessary to make changes.

Step 7

YOU CAN STOP AT THIS POINT if you like how your hair looks, or you can keep moving.

RED: Higher smoothing! You can now change the brush size, to make it better. Still on the "Smooth" Tool.

Step 8

ADD lighter high lights!!
(I choose a WAAY to light high light, so I kinda messed up, so dont choose a color thats TOO light)

RED: Your lock alpha will be off now. or you can leave it on, your choice. Still on the "hair layer"

BRUSH SIZE: Should be smaller, different sizes for each high light is okay too.

PURPLE: This is where you highlights should start!

GREEN: Where your highlights should end.

Step 9

RED: "blend" brush. (since I choose a color too light, I messed up)

BRUSH SIZE: Choose any, that is okay.

Step 10

RED: Choose the "Eraser(Soft edge tool) Opacity should be on LOW, under 40. Use the eraser on the red highlighted parts, near the roots, at the ends, and the borders, and where the hair would curve, or bend,(such as the bangs)

Erase anything else for the highlights that you didn't like.

Step 11

Since the highlights were on a different layer, we want to merge it with the "Hair" layer, by this we go to layers, at the top left corner, and click "Merge Down", NOT Merge all layers.

Step 12

As you can see now, the layers have merged together! The highlight layer has merged together with the "hair" layer.

Step 13

Still on the Hair layer.

BLUE: "Lighten" tool, apply to the blue highlighted areas, in short downward strokes, or along stroke across, dont use too much, or it shall be blinding.

RED: "Darken" tool, Apply on the red highlighted parts.(At the ends and the roots of the hair)

Use on low opacity!

Step 14

IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO USE THE "Darken" tool, because the drawing turned out too bright, etc.
Mine became too red. DO THIS STEP
IF you are happy with how it came out, then you dont have to do this step.

UNDO the parts where you used the "Darken" tool,(you dont have to, we can just color over it too.

RED: Be sure to check "Lock Alpha", makes your life so much easier.(so You color only the place where you have colored, so it doesn't go over to the white area.)

PINK: Choose the "Air Brush"

COLOR: Choose a darker color than your base color.

Color at the blue highlighted places.
At the roots and the ends of the hair. At the parts where you had the base color. Anywhere else where you think you need some, except for the highlighted part of the hair.

Step 15

Add whatever else you need to the hair, in your own style.

Now you are done!! :D
Make the person first, when you draw this, then you know what your drawing on. So then the head doesn't come out weird like my drawing did..

Well, I hope this helped!!

Happy Drawing!
