drawing Drawing Tutorial

how to draw cartoons

last time i've been doodling a lot, mostly cartoons. I like cartoons, because they're easy to draw and are very funny ^_^. So i made a tutorial of it.

Tutorial category: drawing

Tools used: ms. paint

Step 1

i'm not going to write a lot, because my english is horrible, but i'm trying to write as best as i can ^_^

Step 2

first some faces...
the heads can have every shape thinkable, but mosltly round or oval. A round head looks yonger, adults often have ovals.
But triangles, squares and all kind of fruits are also used as shapes for the head.
when you draw a child, you can easily make them more childish by putting the eyes lower in the head.
noses and eyes are in many shapes too, and mouths can be drawn as one single line. Open mouths can have tooth or can be simply black.
the hair is sometimes difficult, but you can experiment with curles, wisps, tails, or just bold.
you can add freckles, those are often three dods on both cheeks. Chins are posible too, but not necessary.

Step 3

it's easy to make facial expressions, because you can exaggerate a lot with cartoons.
when the eyes are closed, wich way the arc is makes a huge difference. look at the drawing, the two faces at the left are exited or active, while the two faces on the right make an relaxed and calm impression.

Step 4

these are some examples of expressions.
the dreaming guy has a way more healthy looking skin than the boy with nightmares. The dreaming one has his eyes calm, the boy with the nighmare has his eyes stressed.
For negative emotions you can use bleak colors, wich make the emotions even more depressing. For happyness and pease you can use colors like orange and yellow, preferably intensely colors.
the angry guy on the drawing has white eyes without pupils, this makes him insane.
The crying guy has depressing colors, and his eyes are three diagonal lines, this makes him really sad.
the happy girl has her arms in the air, this accentuates the happyness.

Step 5

i want to spend some attention to the hands too, because they aren't difficult to draw if you follow these steps.
draw a circle and another circle in it, then draw the fingers and your hand is done. With these rules you can draw your hands in any position.

Step 6

for bodies you can use rectangles or ovals. A rectangle makes a person skinny. rectangles are often used for men.
an oval makes a person plump sometimes. Ovals are often used for women.

Step 7

for bodies you can use ordinary ovals or rectangles, but triangles too. a trianle upsidedown is a muscled man, and a normal triangle can be a fat person.

Step 8

this was my first tutorial, i hope you enjoyed it!
