Step 1

Firstly, the basic head of the portrait is a sphere. A circle does not justify the turning of the head. Draw a 'plus' sign (+) on the sphere so you can imagine it rotating slightly as the head moves. So there is your basic head shape...

Step 2

Through the (+) plus sign lines, we know where we can put the facial features. The horizontal (left to right) line goes THROUGH the eyes. Not above or below. And the vertical (up and down) line goes THROUGH the nose and lips. Also note that the nose should be a quater of the vertical line. This is where you can roughly sketch the facial features

Step 3

Begin to shape the face by employing a jaw line, which is rough lines carving into the sphere to give it more position. The bottom of the jaw is the bottom of the circle. Add basic pupils and make them focused so their vision looks realistic. Also, mark out a line on the forehead to known where hair will be applied. HAIR DOES NOT SIT ON THE HEAD! Mark out basic eye brows too. Also, the yellow bulb lets us know where shadows will be shown. Blatantly mark this out to convey a 3-dimension to the face/sphere.

Step 4

Basically, this is the rough result of the picture. Blend in the shading so it becomes smooth with the face and not as harsh. Add colour into the pupils and best of all, add hair. Remember, hair always come from one part of the head. In this case, it's a middle score which means the hair flows from that pattern. It does not simply grow out of somewhere behind the head.

Step 5

Now the face is beginning to take shape. With the blended shadings, the various hair strands that just need built up through a lot of effort. The eye brows finely done using small strokes. The lips defined with a flattering colour. And the eyes brightened with slightly shaded 'whites' and eye liner/make up and eye lashes. They look powerful and very efficient. From here, your own style can begin to unfold. Take care!
