How to draw poses +a bit of anatomy

In this tutorial I’ll try to explain how to draw –and come up with- poses. I’ll also mention some things about anatomy. Anime poses are special because there’s not much limit to what they do. As long as a human bends that way, it works! It’s a valuable asset to be able to draw poses.

Step 1

Now for some basic anatomy. You’ve probably all seen a doll like this that your art teacher makes you draw. It’s very useful. Here in the middle is the ‘simplified’ version I use, with just sticks and circles. The circles are joints, and the sticks are just to indicate body structure. The proportion should all be completely correct at this stage. There are some ‘stick guides’ (I call them that :D) on the right posing~

Step 2

Now that The stick guide explaining is done, moving on to working out the details of the pose. Working out the details of the pose is important, too, because sometimes you could’ve made your stick guide bend at an odd angle impossible to humans without noticing, even though it’s usually alright. Well, better safe than sorry, ne? Just add some meat to your person, and see if everything looks right. That way, you could prevent the above from happening. Remember that the human body is very curvy, and even curvier with muscles, unless you’re going for a unique style or something like that. ; >

Step 3

Now, how do you come up with these poses?! Well, there’s not much I can do to help you think of poses. Just observe a lot, and pay specific attention to the poses. You can use references to help, as well. Gradually, if you pay attention to poses, they’ll come naturally! You can also use your own body for reference. Strike some poses and look in the mirror! 8D Also, it really helps to draw people with skimpy clothing, showing their anatomy –okay that sounds weird…but it works-
I realize that it’s boring and annoying to go through these steps methodically, but after using this method for a while, regular poses will be easy. There won’t even be a need to go through the three steps anymore! With practise, you’d be able to go straight to lineart while drawing most poses~!
